The PS5 Digital Edition and standard disc PS5 are internally identical — same CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD. The Digital Edition is the exact same hardware with the UHD Blu-ray drive physically removed. As of Sony's most recent official pricing (effective April 2026), the gap is $50: $599.99 Digital versus $649.99 Disc.

What the disc drive actually buys you

**Resale and trade-in value.** A used physical game can be sold or traded; digital purchases are locked to your account permanently. **Ownership independence from PSN.** A disc doesn't stop working if PlayStation Network has an outage, and it survives a title being delisted from the store. **Buying used and renting.** There is no secondary market for digital licenses.

What the Digital Edition wins on

A smaller chassis, marginally quieter operation, and instant game switching without swapping media.

The honest recommendation

If you already buy exclusively through the PlayStation Store and don't care about resale, the Digital Edition is the better value — you sacrifice no performance to save $50. If you buy used or on sale, the $50 disc premium pays for itself faster than it looks. One wrinkle: the standalone external disc drive for retrofitting a Digital Edition later costs $79.99 — more than the price gap at purchase, so buying disc-capable from day one is cheaper than retrofitting.
