Home Wi-Fi Troubleshooting: What to Check Before You Buy New Hardware

A slow or dropping home Wi-Fi connection is one of the most reliably over-solved problems in consumer tech — the default response is often "buy a new router" or "buy a mesh system," when the actual cause is frequently something that costs nothing to fix. Working through the cheap checks first can save real money, and even if you do end up buying new hardware, you'll know it's solving the actual problem rather than a guess.

Step one: identify what's actually failing

"Wi-Fi problems" covers several distinct failure modes that have different causes: total disconnection (the network drops entirely), slow speeds despite a connected status, and inconsistent coverage (fine in one room, unusable in another). Treating these as the same problem leads to fixing the wrong thing — a coverage problem doesn't get better from a faster router, and a raw-speed problem doesn't get better from adding more access points.

The router restart, and why it actually works sometimes

Restarting a router isn't superstition — routers accumulate memory issues and connection-table bloat over long uptimes, especially older or budget hardware, and a restart genuinely clears that state. If your router has been running for weeks or months without a reboot and you're seeing degraded performance, this costs nothing and is worth ruling out before anything else.

Interference: the most commonly ignored cause

Wi-Fi shares radio spectrum with a lot of things — neighboring networks on the same channel, cordless phones, microwave ovens (specifically on the 2.4GHz band), and simply physical obstruction from walls and floors. A network that works fine at 11pm and struggles at 7pm is very often a congestion problem, not a hardware problem — your neighbors' networks are busiest at the same times yours is. Checking which Wi-Fi channel your router is using, and whether it's on a crowded one relative to nearby networks, is a real, free diagnostic step most router admin interfaces support directly.

Placement matters more than most people assume

A router's signal degrades with distance and, more significantly, with the number and material of walls/floors it has to pass through — dense materials like concrete and brick are far more attenuating than drywall. A router placed in a closet, behind a TV, or in a basement is working against a physical handicap no firmware update fixes. Central, elevated, and unobstructed placement is free and frequently makes a bigger difference than a hardware upgrade would.

Band selection: 2.4GHz vs 5GHz (and 6GHz where supported)

2.4GHz travels further and penetrates obstacles better but is slower and more congested (more devices, including non-Wi-Fi ones, use this band). 5GHz is faster with more available channels but has shorter range and penetrates walls less effectively. If your device is connected to 2.4GHz because it's the stronger signal in a given room, that's frequently the actual cause of a "slow Wi-Fi" complaint — worth checking which band a struggling device is actually on before assuming the network itself is the problem.

When new hardware is actually the answer

Your current router is genuinely old enough to lack modern Wi-Fi standards your devices support, meaning you're leaving real speed on the table regardless of placement or interference. Your home's physical layout has coverage dead zones that placement alone can't fix — a large or multi-floor home is the clearest case where a single router, however well placed, has a genuine structural limitation that only additional access points (mesh or otherwise) address. You've ruled out interference, placement, and outdated firmware and specific, repeatable problems remain.

The honest order of operations

Restart it. Check placement. Check for interference and channel congestion. Check which band your struggling devices are actually using. Update firmware if it hasn't been done recently. Only after those free steps still leave a real, specific problem is new hardware the right next move — and at that point, you'll know exactly what limitation you're buying a fix for, rather than hoping a new box solves something you never diagnosed.
