What "AI PC" Actually Means (And Why the Term Gets Abused)

"AI PC" gets slapped on almost every laptop released since 2024, which makes it sound like marketing noise. It isn't — there's a real, specific definition underneath it, at least for the subset Microsoft calls "Copilot+ PCs."

The actual bar

To carry the Copilot+ PC label, Microsoft requires a neural processing unit (NPU) capable of at least 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second), plus 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer. This isn't a vague guideline — it's published as a hard minimum, and it's the gate that decides whether features like Windows' Recall timeline search or Cocreator image generation are available at all.

Which chips actually qualify

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus ship a Hexagon NPU rated at 45 TOPS. AMD's Ryzen AI 300 series (XDNA 2) rates up to 50 TOPS, with the business-focused Ryzen AI PRO 300 series pushing to 55 TOPS. Intel's Core Ultra 200V ("Lunar Lake") series clears 40+ TOPS on the NPU alone, and the newer Core Ultra Series 3 is rated up to 50 NPU TOPS.

Where it gets genuinely confusing

Intel's first Core Ultra generation — Meteor Lake, from late 2023 — does not meet the Copilot+ bar; its NPU alone tops out around 13 TOPS. Intel's own materials sometimes cite a much higher "platform TOPS" number by combining NPU, GPU, and CPU throughput — a number that sounds Copilot+-eligible but isn't the number Microsoft's requirement is actually about.

The honest summary

"AI PC" as a bare term means nothing enforceable. "Copilot+ PC" comes with an actual, checkable spec floor — and the number worth checking is NPU TOPS specifically, not a vendor's more flattering combined figure.
