Three genuinely different phones are fighting for the same $1,000-plus budget this year, and none of them wins outright. If you want the honest version instead of the marketing one: buy the iPhone 17 Pro for longevity and video, the Galaxy S26 Ultra for the most capable camera hardware and a stylus, and the Pixel 10 Pro if what you actually want is the best "point, shoot, done" photo experience with the least fuss.

Price and what you get for it

The iPhone 17 Pro starts at $1,099 for 256GB — up $100 from the iPhone 16 Pro, but Apple doubled the base storage from 128GB, so the per-gigabyte cost actually improved. The Galaxy S26 Ultra starts at $1,299.99 for 256GB, unchanged from the S25 Ultra, and comes with a built-in S Pen — no extra purchase required. The Pixel 10 Pro is the value play at $999 for 128GB, though its base storage is the smallest of the three and there's no expansion.

Camera: the real differentiator

This is where the phones diverge hardest. The Galaxy S26 Ultra runs four rear cameras: a 200MP main sensor, a 50MP ultrawide, and two telephotos (10MP at 3x, 50MP at 5x using Samsung's new prism-free "ALoP" periscope design). Samsung's zoom range is the widest of the three, and reviewers generally find Samsung retains more fine detail at long zoom distances. The iPhone 17 Pro dropped its longest lens from 5x to 4x optical but compensated with a 56% larger telephoto sensor — reviewers describe Apple's output as more consistent in color and exposure even if it resolves slightly less fine detail than Samsung's at maximum zoom. Battery and charging are not close

The Pixel 10 Pro (4,870mAh) charges at a comparatively pedestrian 30W wired. Where each one loses

Don't buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if you dislike Samsung's software layer or have no use for the S Pen. Don't buy the iPhone 17 Pro expecting best-in-class zoom — Apple is playing catch-up on long telephoto versus Samsung. Don't buy the Pixel 10 Pro if you routinely shoot at long zoom distances; its 5x optical ceiling and comparatively modest 30W charging are real limitations.

The actual recommendation

If you shoot a lot of long-distance zoom or want a stylus, the Galaxy S26 Ultra's extra $200 buys real, usable capability. If you're inside an existing Apple ecosystem or care most about consistent video, the iPhone 17 Pro remains the safest all-rounder.
